Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common virus that can cause serious lung infections, especially in babies and young children. RSV can lead to conditions like bronchiolitis and pneumonia, which may require hospitalization.
Beyfortus (nirsevimab) is a medicine designed to help protect infants and young children from severe RSV disease. It works by using special proteins (antibodies) to block the virus from infecting cells. Beyfortus is not a traditional vaccine, but it provides similar protection for about 5 months, covering the RSV season.
All infants younger than age 8 months who are born shortly before or during their first RSV season (typically fall through spring) if:
It is also recommended for children aged 8 through 19 months (about 1 and a half years) who are at an increased risk for severe RSV disease and entering their second RSV season.
While Beyfortus is not a traditional vaccine, it is used similarly to provide protection against RSV. As a monoclonal antibody, Beyfortus works by binding to the RSV virus and preventing it from infecting cells, thereby reducing the risk of severe RSV disease.
Beyfortus has been shown to reduce the risk of severe RSV disease by about 80%. It is also effective in preventing RSV-associated doctor’s office or emergency room visits and even hospital stays.
The time for your baby to receive Beyfortus is dependent on many factors. We recommend talking with your child's pediatrician to determine when is best for your child. General recommendations are below.
If your child was born between the months of:
Beyfortus is recommended seasonally, typically from October to March. This is when RSV is most common in our communities.
Beyfortus protects your child for at least 5 months, which is usually the whole RSV season.
It is given as a single shot by your child’s pediatric provider.
Common side effects of Beyfortus include mild reactions at the injection site, such as redness or swelling. Serious allergic reactions are rare but can occur. If your child has a history of serious allergic reactions to nirsevimab or any of its ingredients, they should not receive Beyfortus.
Yes. It is recommended that Beyfortus be given at the same time as other age-appropriate vaccines.
Beyfortus is part of the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program and is covered by most insurances. If you have questions about your coverage, please call your insurance provider.
